What I am working on at the moment: November 2009

The thrust of what I am interested in exploring is a sense of place and therefore self. I am interested in spatial manipulation and interpretation and how this can alter the human’s assessment of how they exist in relation to the world. This work will explore notions of the sublime and by contrast, spatial structures found in perspective theory. I will examine this through manipulation of scale, perception and through agitating the certainty of assumptions.

This work sets out to explore horizontal line and its contrasts as indicators of time and as devices against which the human can assert their existence. The horizontal line is loaded with association of time and of a level, average or point of rest. As Homo Erectus, do we subconsciously acknowledge ourselves “I am”, in relation to the horizontal line? I intend to draw attention to the "first line" which is the horizon line and how spatial dialogue is constructed around the relationship with this starting concept. The horizon is a democratic reference point which is referenced to both in perspective theory as well as (and by contrast) the sublime in landscape.

This is a copied and enlarged section from an Ordinance Survey Map. I've used pink highlighter pen to distinguish the contour lines, which are rather obscured by the architectural, road and feature symbols. There are different types of spatial demarkation used. Superimposed plan symbols on to relief indication.
